Cleft Stories

Nathaniel’s Story
My name is Jemima, and I am mother to Nathaniel, a seven-year-old with a cleft. His condition made it extremely challenging for us, as food and water would pass through his nose whenever he ate or drank. Coping with this situation was particularly difficult within my community, where some people cruelly claimed that my son was not human and even suggested that I should end his life. Despite these hardships, my husband stood by me through it all, providing unwavering support.
Even with his help, the journey remained difficult until we were directed to KATH, where we encountered the incredible Ghana Cleft Foundation team. Their compassion and dedication restored hope for our family. Through them, we were introduced to Smile Train. Thanks to their generosity, we did not have to pay for Nathaniel’s surgeries, and now my son can eat and drink without complications.
To all mothers who have children with clefts, I urge you not to be discouraged by negative comments or societal pressure. Seek help at KATH, where the Ghana Cleft Foundation team will support and guide you. Similarly, I encourage all husbands to stand by their wives through such challenges. Your support is invaluable.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Ghana Cleft Foundation and to Smile Train for their kindness and generosity. They turned what seemed impossible into reality, restoring joy to our family and allowing Nathaniel to live a healthier life. Thank you for bringing smiles back to our faces and making a true difference in our lives.
