Report on Parent Support Group Meeting organised at KATH, sponsord by GCF

The first quarterly meeting of the Cleft Parent-Support Group came off on the 24th of June 2016. About 100 parents and their children participated in the meeting. Mr Albert Osei-Bagyina gave a presentation on speech, after which he identified children who needed therapy and took them through individually.

A team from First Trust Savings and Loans also gave a presentation on financial independence, where parents were encouraged to engage in a trade of their choice, especially those who are not working, and ensure that they save with reputable Financial Institution.

Two Nurses from the Family Planning Unit of KATH also educated the mothers present on the various family planning methods. Participants also had the opportunity to share experiences, and the key message was for them not to hide their children or kill them, but rather they should treat them as normal children and take the opportunity to educate others.

Participants were refreshed with drinks and pastries, together with packed lunch and water. Transport fares were also given to all the parents.
Special appreciation goes to the Ghana Cleft Foundation, ALL team Members, especially, Prof Peter Donkor, Dr (Mrs) Gyikua Plange-Rhule, Dr Obiri Yeboah, Dr Richard Selormey, Dr Robert Larmine, Mr Albert Osei Bagyina, Julia Awunyo/Mr Bernard Nkrumah and all the Nurses on the Cleft Team.

About us

The idea for establishing the Ghana Cleft Foundation originated in 2005 from discussions among members of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Cleft Clinic. These discussions were informed by the firsthand experiences of the hardships faced by families of children born with cleft lip and palate. The Cleft Clinic attracts patients from all parts of the country, majority of whom are from low income backgrounds.
